Piper Alpha 10th Anniversary Media Briefing
July 6 1998 is the tenth anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster that claimed 167 lives.
Today (26 June) UK Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA) is giving a briefing for journalists to provide a reminder of the background to the event itself, actions taken since to improve safety and future plans for further improvement.
James May, Director-General of UKOOA, comments: Our primary focus on 6 July will be in remembering and paying respect to those who died in the Piper Alpha tragedy and their loved ones.
However, it is understandable that people will use this anniversary to reflect on the improvements in safety made across the Industry and the challenges that still lie ahead.
In the setting up of the Cross-Industry Safety Leadership Forum, UKOOA, the International Association of Drilling Contractors and the Offshore Contractors Association have redoubled their commitment to safety, engaging all sectors of the Industry to secure further improvements.
Safety is, and will remain, the Industrys highest priority. In briefing the media today, we hope to demonstrate that commitment publicly once again.
