Event: The future of the UK gas network: infrastructure, new technologies and energy security

Date:  5 July 2018

Location: London, United Kingdom

This conference will bring together policymakers with key stakeholders to consider the future of UK gas infrastructure – looking at potential upgrades and decommissioning, system resilience and new technologies.

Following the sale of National Grid’s controlling stake in the UK’s gas distribution network and the formation of Cadent Gas, delegates will examine the implications for future energy security and the maintenance of the UK’s gas network.

The seminar also comes as Ofgem consults on the framework for the next price control (RIIO-2) for the gas distribution network and gas and electricity transmission, with the result due by summer 2018 – and discussion is expected on how this can best incentivise companies to deliver the services that consumers value, at the most efficient cost.

In light of the financial go ahead for projects such as H21 Leeds, delegates will also consider the supply of conventional gas, LNG and pipeline maintenance, as well as the role of new, unconventional gas sources – such as onshore shale gas, biogas, and hydrogen – in reducing the carbon footprint of the heat, power and transport sectors.

Further sessions assess the challenges for decarbonising the gas network, and its interrelated role with renewable generation as a base-load energy source, in the context of the targets laid out in the Government’s Clean Growth Strategy.

Event: The Third UK Onshore Oil & Gas Summit

Date: 5 July 2018

Location: Birmingham City Centre

The UK’s onshore oil and gas industry finds itself in a transformative period. Well sites hosting hydraulic fracturing in north England are proceeding from the preparation to drilling phase, the Shale Wealth Fund consultation has drawn to a close and the estimation of 1,300 trillion cubic feet of gas lying beneath the Bowland-Hodder shale is contrasted by studies suggesting onshore extraction in the UK is entering its final decade of viability. Growing pressure on the government to commit to renewable energy and the recent banning of fracking in Scotland has further compounded the economic viability of unconventional drilling methods.

The Third UK Onshore Oil & Gas Summit will be reviewing results of test wells over the previous 12 months from both unconventional and conventional operations. Conference delegates will have the opportunity to hear from industry-leaders on the one-to-three year plan moving forward, in addition to learning more about the opportunities available to local companies and communities through the infrastructural supply-chain and the Shale Wealth Fund.

Event: SPE Aberdeen Young Professionals Simplified Series. Big Data: Making Sense of Information and Analytics in Oil and Gas – Steve Rossiter, Managing Director, AgileTek

Date:  5 September 2018

Location: tbc

Big Data has arisen from the combined progress of data storage, computing power and web technology. This talk will give a short history of these developments and then present the range of technologies that now take large amounts of data, from sources including monitoring systems, ERP/CRM systems, site and survey data and production records, and make use of the information generated. Many companies selling Big Data services are purely focused on revenue enhancement, however this presentation will look at how it can be used to improve safety, quality control and your ability to forecast, and move to evidence-based decision making rather than relying on the intuition of individuals.

Event: SPE Aberdeen Young Professionals Simplified Series. High Pressure Well Kill in Iraqi Kurdistan – Bob Menage, Drilling Fluids Consultant

Date:  5 December 2018

Location: tbc

The well was drilled to depth and tested. Following perforation the well was unable to be controlled at 2.11 SG (19 ppg) and was killed using a cement plug. The cement plug was drilled out and the well displaced to a novel drilling fluid purpose built for this job. Due to the location in Iraq and the local environmental laws it was not possible to use a high density clear brine. The option was to build a heavy fluid from trucked in material. This is an industry first at this density and this presentation shows the processes required.
